Johannes Gustaf was born December 21, 1865 in Skövfelåkra, Slätthog, Kronobergs Län, Sweden. He was the first of five children born to Sara Lena Johansdotter and her husband Kristoffer Johannesson. His father lost his first wife to death so he also had two older half sisters. His family moved to Ekeryd in the Moheda parish and he lived here until he went to serve in the Hälsinge Regiment (army) for two years in Norrland. After his discharge in 1889 he returned to Ekeryd. On March 2, 1889 he received his moving permit to leave the parish. He left Göteborg on March 10, 1889 on the ship Romeo and went to Hull, England. From Hull he went to Liverpool where he left on March 15th on the Arizona arriving in New York Harbor on April 17, 1889. From here he went to his half sister's home in Big Stone County, Minnesota. Here he changed his name from Johannes Kristoffersson to John Christianson. He met Betsy Engberg and they were married in the Lutheran parsonage at Kandiyohi on March 12, 1892. They set up housekeeping in Big Stone Township, Big Stone County. In March 1903, they followed the migration of people and their relatives to North Dakota to homestead. John filed a homestead in section 25 of Roseland Township, Burke County. He received the patent to the land on May 12, 1905. On July 5, 1908 they transferred their church membership to the Elmdale Swedish Lutheran Church in the new town of Niobe, ND. Here they remained faithful members the rest of their lives. John served on the church board and Betsy was an active member of the Ladies Aide, always willing to lend a hand in whichever way she could.John and Betsy were the parents of eight children, Olivia, Arthur (died young), Edward, Baby Girl (died at birth), Arvid, Linnea, Leonard and Alfred. The Christianson home in Roseland Township was a welcoming harbor for many settlers who traveled from their homesteads in the hills to Kenmare to get supplies. Especially in the winter, the travelers knew that the Christianson home was a welcoming stopping place should the weather turn bad or if the snow was deep and their horses needed to rest. Their acts of kindness by the Christianson family were spoken of by many. Over the years their sons gradually took over the farming and John was able to enjoy his twilight years in comfort with his beloved Betsy.A highlight of their life together was their 50th Wedding anniversary. John died on the homestead in Roseland Township on June 29, 1954. His funeral was held in the Elmdale Lutheran Church on July 2, 1954 and burial was in the Elmdale Swedish Lutheran Cemetery.
