Betsy Christianson by John MogrenBrita Stina Hansdotter Engberg was born May 6, 1871 in Vattlång, Harmånger, Gävleborgs Län, Sweden. This in the region called Hälsingland. She was raised in this area and on June 30, 1885 received her moving permit to leave the parish. She left Göteborg on July 10, 1885 on the ship Orlando and went to Hull, England. From Hull she went to Liverpool. Betsy sailed from there on the Etruria arriving in New York Harbor on July 27, 1885. At the age of 14, she traveled by herself crossing the Atlantic Ocean to go Harrison Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota to care for an ailing paternal aunt, Mrs. Peter (Anna Brita) Skoglund. A year later, her parents and three younger brothers emigrated from Sweden to Minnesota. While living in Kandiyohi County, she met her future husband John Christianson. They were married in the Lutheran parsonage at Kandiyohi on March 12, 1892. They set up housekeeping in Big Stone Township, Big Stone County. In March 1903, they followed the migration of people to North Dakota to homestead. John filed a homestead in section 25 of Roseland Township, Burke County. He received the patent to the land on May 12, 1905. On July 5, 1908 they transferred their church membership to the Elmdale Swedish Lutheran Church in the new town of Niobe, ND. Here they remained faithful members the rest of their lives. John and Betsy were the parents of eight children, Olivia, Arthur (died young), Edward, Baby Girl (died at birth), Arvid, Linnea, Leonard and Alfred. A highlight of her life was their 50th Wedding anniversary. Two years later, Betsy lost her beloved John on June 29, 1954. She continued to live on their homestead with her sons, Arvid, Leonard and Alfred. She remained active and enjoyed good health until immediately preceding her death at the Kenmare Hospital on March 25, 1963 at the age of 91 years. Her funeral was held in the Elmdale Lutheran Church on March 29, 1963 and burial was in the Elmdale Swedish Lutheran Cemetery. Källa J.B. Mogren i Find A Grave
