He attended Manistique Public schools and spent the greater part of his life in Manistique, moving to Florida in 1970. He was of the Lutheran faith and was a charter member of the Manistique VFW Post No. 4420. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and was a Corporal in the U.S. Army from 1942-1946. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with one Bronze Star, one Service Stripe and six Overseas Service Bars. He was employed as a heavy equipment operator in the logging industry and as a mechanic at Broman's Service Station in Manistique. He married the former Helen Meredith Mikelson May 22, 1950 in Manistique. Survivors include: his wife, Helen M. of Marshall, Mich.; one son, Kerry Trent Nelson or Manistique; one step-son, Michael B. Mullen of Marshall; two step-daughters, Mrs. Rosalie Miller and Mrs. Judith Spencer, both of Manistique; two brothers, Harley of Manistique and Wally of Englewood, Fla.; one sister, Mrs. Lois Ramsden of Escanaba; seven grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

On May 9, 1953, Harley married the former Lois Foye in Manistique. He worked for many years for Manistique Tool and also worked for the Jewel Tea Company as a driver. Harley further worked as a bartender, gas station attendant and painted houses, always keeping himself busy.Harley is survived by his wife; Lois Nelson of Manistique; his five children; Brady L. Nelson of Escanaba, Michigan, Kim (Larry) Berger of Cedar Lake, Indiana, Dean (Dawn) Nelson of Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, Kelli (Tom) Smith of Manistique, Michigan and Karla (Bill) Roddy of Wausaukee, Wisconsin; his eleven grandchildren; Brady R., Linsey and Paul Nelson, Cory Berger, Erin Nelson, Travis, Trent and Todd Smith, and Bill, Bryan and Katelyn Roddy; his seven great-grandchildren; Lillyan, Elaine, Raymond, Natalie, Nicholas, Erick and Logan. He is further survived by his sister; Geraldine Hugo. In addition to his parents, Harley is preceded in death by his step-father, Henry Larson, sister, Lois Ramsden, and brothers, Gilbert and Wally Nelson and Gerald Larson.
