Richard L. Markham Departed this life peacefully on March 20, 2007 at home and in the arms of his loving wife. Richard was born on March 7, 1930 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Leonard and Mildred (Watts) Markham. The oldest of three sons, he was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Gary Markham. Richard proudly served our country for 23 years in the United States Army. He entered the Army as a Private and retired in 1970 as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Corps of Engineers. He was stationed in the Far East for eleven years where he served, among other assignments, three tours of duty in Vietnam and one year as US Army Advisor to the Burmese Army in the country now known as Myanmar. After retiring from the Army, Richard moved his family from Hawaii to Tacoma and became a real estate agent for Starkey Company. While employed at Starkey Company, he attended Tacoma Community College and at his graduation ceremony was presented with his Associate's Degree as well as the prestigious President's Medal for academic excellence (4.0 GPA). At the time, Richard was also an active member of both the University Place Rotary and the Tacoma Elks Lodge #174. Eventually, Richard was appointed the Broker of Starkey Company and successfully managed the company for a few years until deciding to retire for the second and last time. On hearing of his recent illness, oldest grandson Terran Markham, who resides in Creswell, OR, drove north to spend some quality time with Papa. As did brother Steve Markham and wife Nancy, residents of Pocatello, ID, who drove east to spend several days visiting Richard prior to his passing. Richard is survived by his wife Dorette, sons Scott Markham (Kathy) and Todd Markham, daughter Toni Markham (pictured above with her Dad) and five exceptional grandchildren - Terran, Chase, Laci, Haley and Bo - and brother Steve (Nancy). The family extends heartfelt thanks to the caring doctors, nurses and staff at both St. Clare's Hospital and Franciscan Hospice. Beloved husband, Dad, Papa, brother will be honored and cherished privately by the family. Källa: Find A Grave
