Helen E. Franden passed away Saturday, April 10, 2004, in Austin, Texas, at the age 89. Helen was born in Chicago, Illinois, on November 21, 1914. On September 7, 1935, she married Robert T. Franden, the love of her life, who survives her. Helen and Bob resided in Wilmette, Illinois, where they raised their seven children until 1979 when they moved to McAllen, Texas. In 1998 they moved to Austin, Texas. Helen loved life and learning and was a lifetime lover of books and travel. She passed on a passion for both to her children. Her travels took her all over the world, including a 2002 trip to the Mediterranean, which is memorialized by a picture of her in Egypt astride a camel at the age of 87. Helen took great interest in and developed many friends through her community activities. She was particularly proud of her association with the McAllen International Museum as a volunteer and board member and with the Pan American Round Table, which is dedicated to fostering greater understanding among peoples on both sides of our southern border. Upon moving to Austin, Helen enjoyed the city's rich cultural life and was in regular attendance at the symphony, opera, ballet and the various productions at the Zachary Scott Theatre. In addition to her husband, Robert, Helen is survived by her seven children and their spouses: Julie Fitzgerald and her husband, Louis, of Cary, North Carolina; Robert and his wife, Gena, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Steven and his wife, Judith, of Austin, Texas; Elise Franden Wilkinson and her husband, Gerardo Alvarez, of Houston, Texas; Jack and his wife, Janet, of Elgin, Texas; Michael and his wife, Mary Ann, of Littleton, Colorado; and Andrea and her husband, Mark Fahey, of Larchmont, New York.
