William "Bill" A. Racette, 86, of Sturgeon Lake passed away on Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011. Bill was born on Sept. 30, 1925, in Duluth, Minn., to Arthur A. and Ethel M. Racette. After his 1943 graduation from Denfeld High School in Duluth, Bill enlisted in the United States Air Force, and served as a staff sergeant aerial gunner in the 319th Bombardment Squadron of the 90th Bombardment Group during World War II. Bill flew on combat missions, throughout the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, with the famous "Jolly Rogers." For his service he was awarded a number of medals and citations and he was honorably discharged from the service in 1947.In 1948 Bill met his future wife, Katherine M. (Kay) Brand, and they were married the following year in Duluth. In 1953 Bill and Kay moved to La Crosse, Wis., where he worked as an engineer/draftsman for the Trane Company for 35 years. During that time, Bill and Kay raised five children in addition to opening their home to six foster children. In 1986 Bill and Kay realized their lifelong dream of retiring in the northwoods of Minnesota, and built their home on Sturgeon Lake. For 20 years they welcomed family and friends to share their love of the lake. Bill enjoyed nothing more than taking the family out on the pontoon for early morning fishing, and summer evenings spent with the grandkids, playing games. Bill and Kay were both active members of Hope Lutheran Church in Moose Lake, Minn.Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Clara Jean Mordell; and his beloved wife, Katherine. Bill is survived by their five children: Gary (Gretchan) of Clinton Township of Mich., Tom (Ginny) of Sheridan, Wyo., Cathy (Bob) Logar of Manhattan, Mont., Gail (George) Berry of Newcastle Maine, and John (Jeanette) of Gig Harbor, Wash. In addition, Bill is survived by 12 grandchildren: Leigh Townsend, Mandy Campbell, Justin Racette, Meghan Racette, Laura Lemke, Adam Logar, Beth Logar, Anna Berry, Cassie Berry, Conner Racette, Julia Racette and Lissa Racette; and seven great-grandchildren: Isaiah, Alliah, Sierra and Sienna Campbell, Jenna and Kylie Lemke, and Colin Townsend.
