He graduated Monticello High School in 1940 and attended the University of Minnesota. While at the university John was a member of ROTC which led to him attending officer training school in Annapolis, Maryland. During World War II he served along the East Coast and in the Caribbean as Lieutenant JG aboard a destroyer escort. Following his honorable discharge he returned to the University and received his Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. John married Joan Beutner on Dec. 20, 1946, in Hennepin Avenue Methodist Church in Minneapolis. After marriage they made their home in Sioux Falls where John worked for the John Morrell Company. Over the years they lived in various communities and John worked for various companies. They include the John Morrell Company in Ottumwa, Iowa, Green Giant in Le Sueur, Chun King in Duluth, Robb-Ross Foods in Sioux City, Iowa, Pawnee Corporation in Pipestone where he later served as a board member, Jeno's Inc. in Duluth, Tony Down's Foods in St. James, and Joanna's Inc. in Duluth. After semi-retirement in the 1980's, John stayed active in the industry as a consultant. John was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Duluth. He was a proud veteran and a member of the Kitchi Gammi Club and Northland Country Club in Duluth. He enjoyed golf, investing, reading and keeping up on current events. He was extraordinarily friendly and kind and was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Oliver. Survivors include his wife of nearly 70 years, Joan; his daughter and son-in-law, Sue and John W. Anderson of Northfield; his son and daughter-in-law, Scott Carlson and Susan Engebretson of Hayden, Idaho; three grandsons, Jim (Kerry) Anderson of Richfield, Karl Anderson of St. Paul, Paul Anderson of Minneapolis; three great-grandsons, Bernie, Theo and Finn; three sisters, Helen Peterson of Minneapolis, Gladys (Bob) Finn of California, Betty Trout of Eden Prairie; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
