Gustaf Alfred Hellzen, Jr. "King Vasa" passed away on February 14, 2009 peacefully at his home in Mora, Minnesota. He was 78 years old.Gus was born April 16, 1930 in Grasston, Kanabec County, Minnesota to Gustaf and Agnes (Dennewith) Hellzen. Gus's father was a butter maker and they living in the following communities of Day, Grasston, Stacy, Cambridge and Braham. Gus graduated from Braham High School in 1947. He later served in the Korean Conflict from 1951-1953. Gus served with B Battery, 92nd Army Field Artillery Battalion. On June 17, 1955 he married Betty Laman at the Stanchfield Baptist Church in Stanchfield, Minnesota. To this union three children were born. Gus and Betty lived and raised their family in Mora. After his honorable discharge from the Army as a Corporal, he was employed at Blaw Knox in Mora and for several years enjoyed working for different companies in the creamery industry installing dryer equipment. He retired in 1992 as the maintenance engineer at the Kanabec Hospital. Gus was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mora. He was also involved in the Mora America Legion Post 201 (Post commander 1975-76 and 1993-94, lifetime Member for 55 years). He was a member of the following for over 50 years; the Mora Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, Shriners, Scottish Rite; and also a lifetime member of the MN Deer Hunters; Boy Scouts of America (an Eagle Scout), and Deer Lake Watershed Association of Effie, MN. He also served as King Vasa for the Mora Vasaloppet. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and working in his woodshop making various woodcraft projects. Gus really enjoyed his time at his cabin on Deer Lake. He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved himHe was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother Jerry.He is survived by his wife Betty of Mora; sons Gus III and wife Janice of White Bear Lake, Jerry and wife Laurie of Maple Grove; daughter Sue and husband Leonard Flikke of Brook Park; grandchildren Eric and Jenna Hellzen, Heather Flikke, Sheila (Jayme) Benson, Nate (Jackie) Hellzen, and Jake Hellzen, 3 great grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law Howard Levi, Virgina Lawrence, Shirley (Dale) Halberg, Charles (Loretta) Laman, Dale (Lorraine) Laman and Linda Lahre; plus many nieces and nephews.Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, Feb. 18th at First Presbyterian Church in Mora. Rev. Duane Fowler officiated. Music was provided by Alice Nelson and Randy Reynolds. Pallbearers were Art Lind, John Gustafson, Timothy Laman, Donald Holmquist, Emmett Oien, Lee Svoboda and John Lindblom. Honorary pallbearers were the members of the Mora Masonic Lodge. Military honors were provided by the Mora American Legion Post 201. Interment was at Grass Lake Cemetery in Grasston, MN. Arrangement were handled by Akkerman Ingebrand Funeral Home of Mora.
